Blank Canvas is the vinous studio of award-winning international winemaking consultant Matt Thomson and Master of Wine Sophie Parker-Thomson. With over 40 years of collective experience in the global wine industry, they produce small batch fine wines from exceptional single vineyard sites throughout New Zealand under their art-meets-science project. Matt has worked over 50 vintages in numerous wine regions around the world and has worked with David Gleave since 1994. Sophie has been travelling to Europe and working with Matt since 2011, leaving her career in law behind her. The classic Holdaway Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is near bone-dry with intense passionfruit and blackcurrant notes, alongside an attractive salty character distinctive of the coastal Dillons Point subregion. It is quickly becoming established as one of New Zealand’s top rated Sauvignon Blanc wines.

Labour, Covid and weather all impacted the 2022 vintage, but those who had the ability to put in extra work in the vineyards were rewarded. It is a classic expression of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, being 100% tank fermented, but it offers complexity of texture and a mineral drive that summons river stones and sea spray. Blackcurrant, guava and passion fruit are captured alongside the subtlest hint of oyster-shell. This wine is focused and explosive on both nose and palate yet remains elegantly balanced, with distinct salinity.
