Sakai Hoitsu (Japanese, 1761–1828)
Poppies and Morning Glories, 1820s

Born into an eminent samurai family, Sakai Hoitsu renounced his inheritance and became a Buddhist priest. In seclusion for the next twenty years, he devoted himself to the study of paintings by Ogata Korin, to whose sense of design Hoitsu’s work is indebted. Here, the artist captured a momentary glimpse both visually dazzling and startlingly realistic.

2¼ x 7¼ in. decorative bookmark, attractively packaged in a plastic sleeve for protection.
