Azaleas and Apple Blossoms, 1879
American Charles Caryl Coleman (1840–1928) spent some fifty years as an expatriate artist living in Italy. There he became associated with the Aesthetic movement begun in Britain in the last quarter of the nineteenth century as an antidote to the Industrial Revolution. In addition to Vesuvian landscapes and works with religious themes, Coleman became renowned for large-scale still-life panels that incorporated the decorative objects and aesthetic traditions of many cultures—particularly the delicate Japanese art then fashionable.
