Maple and Flowers, second quarter of 19th century
Suzuki Kiitsu was the son of a textile dyer. He took up the family trade before apprenticing to samurai artist Sakai Hoitsu, leader of the nineteenth-century Rinpa school revival in Edo. Kiitsu became an influential Rinpa artist, emphasizing naturalism in his depictions of flowers and plants.
